Suleiman: Lebanon has new documents on Shebaa

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman will provide the United Nations with documents 'that will proves the Shebaa Farms belong to Lebanon'.

Suleiman made the announcement during a meeting with visiting British Foreign Secretary David Miliband on Monday, the Lebanese daily Yalibnan reported on Tuesday.

The report, however, did not elaborate on the nature of the documents that could potentially pave the way for finding a diplomatic solution to the issue.

The Israeli regime occupied Shebaa Farms in the 1967 war. Although Syria says the territory belongs to Lebanon, Israel has so far declined to return the land to Lebanon under the pretext of ambiguity about its status.

The An Nahar daily on Tuesday quoted diplomatic sources as saying that the British Foreign Secretary had promised Lebanese leaders that he would discuss the issue with UN chief Ban Ki-moon in London next week.

The sources said that Miliband will talk with Ban on ways to convince Zionist regime to withdraw from the farms area after Suleiman revealed that Lebanon had new documents proving the identity of Shebaa.

The Lebanese daily al-Hayat reported that a Hezbollah representative had told French President Nicholas Sarkozy that the movement would accept a diplomatic solution to return the Shebaa Farms to the country.

According to the report, Hezbollah MP Mohamed Raad had voiced its support for a diplomatic solution to the dispute during a meeting with Sarkozy.
