Palestinians View US Midterm Election Results as a Shift in Support for Israel

Palestinians view the results of the US midterm elections as a sign of changing political attitudes in the United States and a potential decline in unconditional support for Israel.

They believe that growing criticism of Israeli policies, stronger public backing for Palestinian rights, and victories by left-wing candidates within the Democratic Party could gradually weaken the influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups.

Palestinians do not necessarily support the Democratic Party, but they believe that differences between competing political currents in the United States can create opportunities to advance the Palestinian cause.

From their perspective, Democratic administrations have generally been more favorable toward Palestinian interests than Republican governments, although they consider Joe Biden’s presidency an exception in light of his administration’s extensive military and political support for Israel.

They regard the most significant development in the recent elections not simply as the victory of one political camp over another, but as the increasingly open criticism of Israel and its powerful lobbying networks by American candidates. Some candidates openly condemned the genocide in Gaza and expressed support for Palestinian rights—positions that, until recently, could have seriously damaged a candidate’s political prospects and exposed them to accusations of antisemitism or support for terrorism.

Another major development was the advance of candidates associated with the socialist and progressive left within the Democratic Party, alongside the defeat of several established party figures. Palestinians believe this shift could challenge the traditional political establishment’s strong support for Israel and restrict the influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups.

In their assessment, these changes could gradually reduce Israel’s political room for maneuver in Washington and weaken one of the key pillars underpinning its international position.

Nevertheless, Palestinians acknowledge that electoral developments do not automatically translate into concrete policy changes. They caution that ending US military and political support for Israel, as well as Washington’s protection of the Israeli government from international pressure, will require time and sustained political change.

Overall, Palestinians interpret the election results as a significant setback for Israel and a positive development for the Palestinian cause, potentially opening the way for greater scrutiny of US policy in the region and a reassessment of Washington’s longstanding support for Israel.
