Iran lashes out at US over rehashed Yemen remarks, calls Washington ‘root of regional instability’

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei made the remarks in a post on X on Wednesday after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio rehashed Washington’s allegations against Tehran of providing material and other instances of support for Yemen’s Ansarullah popular resistance movement.

“Rubio’s lies cannot replace facts. Ansarallah is an independent Yemeni actor that makes its own decisions; it takes orders from no one and acts as nobody’s proxy,” the spokesman wrote.

“The roots of instability in the region lie in US military interventions and hegemonic policies. If Washington genuinely wanted peace, it would take one simple step: end its malign and destabilizing interventions in our region,” he added.

Saudi Arabia and its allies began taking Yemen under a deadly and devastating war and simultaneous siege in 2015 in an unsuccessful campaign aimed at restoring the country’s former Riyadh- and Washington-backed authorities.

That year, the United States started providing lethal military, arms, and intelligence support as well as political backing for the campaign.

Washington has proactively resorted to military aggression against the impoverished Arab Peninsula nation on numerous occasions too, each time bombing the country’s vital infrastructures and import arteries.

 “Peace in Yemen cannot be imposed through bombs and external pressure. It begins with genuine negotiations based on the roadmap agreed by the parties,” Baghaei concluded.
