President Pezeshkian hails MoU with US as testament to ‘a powerful Iran’

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has hailed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed with the United States as a “historic document” and a demonstration of Iran’s strength on the world stage.

“This is a historical document and a message from a powerful Iran: Peace will be realized in the shadow of mutual respect,” Pezeshkian wrote on social media on Thursday, sharing images of the signed agreement.

The president reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to global peace while preserving its dignity, independence, and national interests.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always been committed and steadfast to global peace while preserving its dignity and independence, as well as to progress and regional cooperation,” he said.

The 14-point document was signed remotely in the early hours of Thursday by Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump, who was attending the G7 summit in France.

The signing format was shifted from an in-person ceremony in Switzerland to a virtual procedure following consultations over the past 24 hours, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei announced on national television.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who served as mediator in the months-long diplomatic effort, also signed the memorandum. Sharif announced that the agreement enters into force with immediate effect.

The memorandum, which sets the stage for 60 days of negotiations toward a final deal, includes a US commitment to work with regional partners on a $300 billion reconstruction and economic development plan for Iran.

The United States also undertakes to terminate all types of sanctions against Iran and release frozen assets, according to the text.

Under the agreement, all military aggressions, including those in Lebanon, have ended. Iran has committed not to procure or develop nuclear weapons – an obligation which the Islamic Republic has always reiterated through years.

The first round of implementation negotiations is expected to take place on Friday at the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock, with Pakistan and Qatar serving as mediators. The final agreement is to be endorsed by a binding UN Security Council resolution.
