Gaza Municipality warns of worsening waste crisis amid shrinking resources
Amid the deterioration of service conditions, Gaza Municipality warned of the growing waste crisis in the city due to the severe shortage of machinery required to collect and transport garbage, which has led to its accumulation in streets and random dumps, and to rising health and environmental risks for residents.
In a press statement on Friday, the municipality explained that the waste sector is facing accumulated challenges, foremost among them the deterioration and old age of the available machinery and its inability to operate regularly, especially container emptying vehicles, which causes containers to fill up quickly. It also pointed out that transporting waste to the Abu Jarad land south of the city requires additional machinery, which has further intensified the problem.
With the advent of the month of Ramadan, the municipality confirmed a noticeable increase in waste quantities due to higher household consumption, in addition to the rise in rapidly decomposing organic waste, which doubles health and environmental risks in residential neighborhoods.
The municipality called for the launch of urgent projects to collect and transport waste and to strengthen night collection operations to reduce garbage accumulation, warning that the continuation of the current situation contributes to the spread of insects and rodents, an increase in citizens’ complaints, higher operational burdens on the municipality, and a decline in the level of public cleanliness in the city.
This comes amid daily violations committed by Israel of the ceasefire agreement since 10 October, 2025, as data indicate the killing of 618 Palestinians since the agreement came into effect, including 198 children and 85 women, in addition to the injury of 1,663 others with varying wounds.
Since 7 October 2023, Zionist regime, with American and European support, has launched a genocide in the Gaza Strip, including killing, starvation, destruction, displacement, and arrest, in disregard of international appeals and orders of the International Court of Justice to stop it.
The genocide has resulted in more than 243,000 Palestinians martyred or injured, most of them children and women, in addition to more than 11,000 missing, hundreds of thousands of displaced persons, a famine that has claimed many lives, and widespread destruction that has affected most cities and areas of the enclave.
