Yemenis mourn martyred military chief al-Ghamari at massive Sana’a funeral

Hundreds of thousands of mourners flooded the streets of the Yemeni capital of Sana’a on Monday for the funeral of Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Staff Lieutenant General Mohammad Abd al-Karim al-Ghamari, who was declared a martyr in Israeli airstrikes in August.

The massive procession, dubbed the “Day of Loyalty to the Faithful,” converged on Al-Sabaeen Square and the Al-Shaab Mosque.

The gathering represented a significant display of national sentiment, drawing citizens from across the capital and various provinces, alongside high-ranking military officials and government representatives.

Crowds carried portraits of the late general, Yemeni flags, and banners expressing solidarity with the Palestinian Resistance and condemning the US-Israeli aggression.

Al Mayadeen reported that hundreds of thousands of citizens participated in the funeral, highlighting the broad public veneration for martyr al-Ghamari.

The event in Sabaeen Square served as a vivid demonstration of national unity and popular support for General al-Ghamari and the strategic direction of the Yemeni Armed Forces.

In a televised statement last Thursday, the Yemeni Armed Forces announced that General al-Ghamari was “martyred while carrying out his duties in support of Palestine.” The statement eulogized him and his comrades as “steadfast mujahideen” who were deeply committed and experienced in their cause.

‘Sacrifices will only deepen Yemen’s support for Palestine’

During the funeral, Mahdi al-Mashat, head of the Yemeni Supreme Political Council, said that al-Ghamari was martyred “honorably” in the most noble battle and the purest cause of supporting the people of Gaza.

He added that al-Ghamari “attained the honor he sought” and praised his sacrifice, wishing him closeness to the ranks of the martyrs.

Al-Mashat reiterated Yemen’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause and Gaza, saying sacrifices will only deepen their commitment. He warned that those who serve the enemy, Israeli or otherwise, will face retribution.

Since the onset of Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023, Yemen’s forces have carried out scores of operations in support of the war-hit Gazans, striking targets throughout the occupied Palestinian territories, in addition to targeting Israeli ships or vessels heading towards ports in the occupied territories.

With a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in place, Sana’a has warned that if Israel violates the agreement in the Gaza Strip, it will face a more “severe and decisive” response by the Yemeni Armed Forces.
