Hamas warns against closure of Ibrahimi Mosque, calls for protection of holy sites

The Hamas Movement warned on Wednesday of the dangers posed by the Zionist regime’s occupation authorities’ decision to close the Ibrahimi Mosque to worshipers, describing the move as a direct attack on freedom of worship and a violation of the sanctity of Islamic holy sites.

In a press statement, the Movement said the closure of the Ibrahimi Mosque comes as part of the extremist Zionist regime’s government’s policy of targeting the Palestinian people and their land and accelerating policies of annexation and Judaization.

Hamas said the Ibrahimi Mosque constitutes an integral part of the religious, national, and historical identity of the Palestinian people and the Islamic nation, stressing that attempts by the Zionist regime’s occupation to impose partition and control over holy sites do not grant it any right or legitimacy to exercise sovereignty over them.

The Movement called on Palestinians in al-Khalil and across the West Bank to strengthen their presence around the Ibrahimi Mosque, confront policies of restriction and Judaization and attacks on holy sites, and resist the Israeli occupation by all means in order to deter it from continuing its aggression against the land and holy sites.

Hamas also called on the Arab and Islamic nations, at both the official and popular levels, to assume their responsibilities and take urgent action to halt the continuing attacks on the Ibrahimi Mosque, Aqsa Mosque, and other Islamic holy sites.
