Practical Islam at the
heart of the Iranian revolution

Canadian political expert

Eric Walberg: Ayatollah Khomeini's main focus as leader of the Islamic revolution in Iran was to fight world injustice. That means fighting US imperialism and Israeli colonialism.

Qodsna (Tehran) – Speaking to Qods News Agency, a Canadian writer, senior journalist and political expert Eric Walberg said Ayatollah Khomeini's main focus as leader of the Islamic revolution in Iran was to fight world injustice. That means fighting US imperialism and Israeli colonialism. the year 1979 was a turning point for the world. The Soviet Union, which was a strong supporter of Palestine, was called on by a revolutionary Afghan government, faced with US-backed infiltration. This ill-fated attempt to promote socialism, in Afghanistan, proved too much for an ailing system and a decade later the Soviet Union collapsed.

The US supported the Afghan guerrilla fighter but created a hell next door to Iran. Iran wisely stayed out of the conflict, as the rebels were/ are promoting an extreme form of Islam which is anti-Shia, he added.

Instead, Ayatollah Khomeini focused on helping the Palestinians and all countries fighting the 'great satan', the warmongering imperialists. He told a Cuban delegation to Tehran in April 1979, “Government should focus on being in the service of the nations. The nations will then support them.”, Walberg noted.

“This practical Islam was at the heart of the Iranian revolution. Iran's principled foreign policy has remained strong, though its enemies work day and night to undermine it. The world can thank Ayatollah Khomeini for leading the world in the fight against injustice and exploitation”.
