PPS: Prisoners’ suffering multiplies as their number increases

“The suffering of Palestinian prisoners is ongoing,” the PPS stressed, adding that the Israel Prisons Service (IPS) does not provide the prisoners with basic human needs due to the increasing number of detainees.

The PPS underlined that some detainees had been held in interrogation cells under horrific circumstances for a long time as the IPS refuses to transfer them to prisons, revealing that some had been held for more than 70 days even after completing their investigation.

It warned that the suffering of the prisoners will multiply during the winter season as the IPS provides bed sheets at high prices as part of its systematic economic exploitation policy practiced against Palestinian prisoners.

New detainees are mostly transferred to Ofer and Megiddo where circumstances are the most challenging. Ofer prison has two sections for detainees, each sufficing for 72 detainees, while recently 80 detainees were transferred to each section. 

More than 5,300 Palestinians have been detained since the beginning of 2022.
