Palestinians mark 32nd anniversary of Aqsa Mosque massacre

The Palestinian people mark on Saturday, October 8, the 32nd anniversary of the first Aqsa Mosque massacre, which was committed by Israeli occupation forces in 1990.

On Monday, October 8, 1990, before noon prayers, extremist settlers from temple mount groups tried to lay the foundation stone for the alleged third temple at the Aqsa Mosque, which sparked clashes with Palestinian worshipers.

Israeli police forces intervened and opened fire indiscriminately at dozens of Muslim worshipers inside their own Mosque, killing at least 21 people, injuring more than 200, arresting 270 others. At the time, the police prevented ambulance crews from entering the holy site and delayed the evacuation of the victims for long hours.

Prior to the massacre, the Israeli police set up checkpoints on all the roads leading to the Aqsa Mosque to prevent Muslim worshipers from reaching the holy site.

However, many worshipers had already gathered inside the Mosque hours earlier in response to popular calls that urged the Al-Quds residents to protect the holy site.

The Israeli occupation authority had also circulated a statement, a few days before the massacre, in which it incited Jewish settlers to march en masse to the Aqsa Mosque to mark the occasion of the Sukkot holiday.

Following the massacre, Jewish settler groups closed the Aqsa Mosque’s al-Maghariba Gate, claiming that the entry of Muslims through this gate would be a threat to their lives.
