Lebanese chess player refuses to play against Israeli opponent

A Lebanese chess player on Wednesday withdrew from the World Chess Championship held in Georgia after she was set to face an Israeli opponent.

The Lebanese player Sally Hamada refused to play against an Israeli player in refusal of normalization with Israel, according to the head of the Lebanese delegation, Jamal Shamiya, who stressed refusal to recognize Zionist regime or normalize relations with it.

Earlier in August, the Lebanese player Charbel Abu Daher had withdrawn from the World Mixed Martial Arts Championship in Abu Dhabi, refusing to face an Israeli player. Last year, Abu Daher’s compatriot, Abdullah Miniato, withdrew from the same tournament held in Bulgaria, refusing to face an Israeli player.
