UK foreign secretary to make Israel trip, Lapid says

Britain's Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is expected to visit occupied territories in the coming month, an Israeli Foreign Ministry statement said without specifying an exact date.

Foreign Minister and Prime Minister-designate Yair Lapid invited Truss by phone on Wednesday, the statement said, adding that "the two discussed the need for determined action by the international community against Iran.", Israel Hayum reported.

Lapid is set to take over from Prime Minister Naftali Bennett at the head of a caretaker government after he and Bennett moved on Monday to dissolve parliament and hold an early national election.

The US National Security Council spokesperson also assured that Biden's trip was still on despite the political turmoil in Israel, saying earlier this week that "we have a strategic relationship with Israel that goes beyond any one government. The president looks forward to the visit next month."

While in Israel, Biden could declare the establishment of a regional air defense system to protect against Iranian missiles and drones. The alliance is expected to include the US along with Israel and Abraham Accord countries, but also Arab countries such as Qatar and Iraq, Israel Hayum claimed.

The American president will likely also discuss his administration's nuclear negotiations with Iran with Lapid, who by then will have been appointed to head the transition government.
