Brighton group calls for help to rebuild Gaza bookshop destroyed by airstrikes
A pro-Palestinian group is appealing for donations to help restock a bookshop that was destroyed by airstrikes in Gaza.
Donations of money and books from around the world have flooded in to help rebuild one of Gaza’s largest booksellers, the two-story Samir Mansour bookshop, which was destroyed by Israeli airstrikes in May.
Brighton and Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign (BHPSC) is holding a book collection at the Clock Tower in North Street at midday tomorrow with all the donations going towards rebuilding the bookshop.
A spokesman for BHPSC said: “The project in Brighton and Hove, co-ordinated by Brighton & Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign, is organizing a network of drop-off points around the city so that anyone wishing to donate books can do so easily and safely.
“Numerous local organizations and businesses are taking part. All books donated by mid-September will be shipped to Gaza.
Local mosques have already donated hundreds of books to the appeal.
“Any books will be accepted, whether in English or in Arabic; however the priorities are children’s books, school textbooks, and books in Arabic. The books must be in good condition.”
The Samir Mansour bookshop was founded 21 years ago by Palestinian Mansour and contained tens of thousands of books in various languages covering everything from philosophy and art history to fiction and children’s books.
It was reduced to rubble on 18 May, during the 11-day conflict that killed more than 250 people in Gaza and 13 in Israel.
A fundraiser managed by human rights lawyers Mahvish Rukhsana and Clive Stafford Smith has raised more than $200,000 (£141,000) to help rebuild the shop, while tens of thousands of donated books have been sent from all over the world to help Mansour restock.
