Morocco and achievement
of normalization with Israel

In the current situation, Moroccan officials have decided to use the last days of the Trump administration to overcome one of the most important obstacles to their governance in recent decades and pave the way for the annexation of the disputed Western Sahara region to their territories.

Morocco this week became the fourth Arab nation since August to announce a US-brokered deal to normalise relations with Israel, following the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan.

As part of the deal, the US has agreed to recognise Morocco's claim over the disputed Western Sahara region.

A core element of the deal brokered by Donald Trump was US recognition of Morocco’s claim to sovereignty over the Western Sahara. A decades-old territorial dispute has pitted Morocco against the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, which seeks to establish an independent state.

According to the Israeli Channel 12 television report, “after realizing that during Joe Biden's presidency, the United States did not agree to the annexation of the Western Sahara to Morocco, the King of Morocco took a major step towards strengthening relations with Israel. Morocco in the past 45 years ago, has been trying to get the US to agree to the annexation of the Western Sahara to its own territories, but after failing to do so, it has turned to Israel and the Jewish lobby in the United States to help it”.

On the other hand, Moroccan official’s sources emphasize that the Rabat-Tel Aviv agreement, like the agreements between the UAE and Bahrain with Israeli regime, does not include the opening of diplomatic offices or the exchange of ambassadors, and only under this agreement the relationships between the two sides will return to pre-2002 conditions. Flights between Morocco and Israel are set to resume in the future.
