Palestinian movement leader Hamas isolated by Covid-19

The leader of the Palestinian Hamas movement based in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar, remains in quarantine after he was infected by Covid-19, confirmed today the Al-Ayyam newspaper.

According to the newspaper published in this city, his state of health is good and despite the isolation, he exercises his functions as head of the organization in the sector within a hospital ward, under prevention and safety measures, he said.

In November, the Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Saeb Erekat, passed away after almost a month of battle against the serious disease.

The politician was for decades one of the most visible faces of that Arab people in the international arena, in defense of historical claims, both in forums and in negotiation processes.

After an improvement in the epidemiological situation, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Al-Quds (Jerusalem), face a second and more severe wave of the pandemic, which forced the resumption of partial closures (from Sunday to Thursday) and general confinements (Friday and Saturday).

Health authorities currently diagnose over two thousand infections per day.

The initial outbreak that emerged in March in the city of Bethlehem now has as one of its main epicenters the Gaza Strip, blockaded and bombed by Israel, and with a fragile health infrastructure.
