Palestinian captive’s hunger strike ends in victory

Hunger-striking Palestinian captive in Zionist regime’s jails, Maher al-Akhras has ended his hunger strike that lasted for 103 days after the Zionist regime’s occupation authorities agreed to his conditions.

Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) said in a statement on Friday evening that 49-year-old Akhras decided to end his hunger strike after the Zionist regime’s occupation authorities agreed to set him free on 26/11/2020 and not to renew his administrative detention.

It added that Akhras would remain in hospital until the date of his release to receive treatment.

Akhras thanked the Palestinian captives and people, Arab supporters, and free people of the world for supporting his case.

Al-Akhras, a father of six who comes from the northern West Bank district of Jenin, was abducted on July 27 and slammed with a four-month administrative detention order without any clear charges and based on secret evidence not available even to his lawyers.

He immediately went on hunger strike demanding his release from prison.

Israel’s widely condemned policy of administrative detention allows detention of Palestinians without charge or trial for renewable intervals usually ranging between three and six months based on undisclosed evidence that even a detainee’s lawyer is barred from viewing.

Over the years, Zionist regime has placed thousands of Palestinians in administrative detention for prolonged periods of time, without trying them, without informing them of the charges against them, and without allowing them or their counsel to examine the evidence.
