Fathi Shaqaqi understood necessity
for successful national resistance

Rodney Shakespeare

Qodsna (Tehran) - On the occasion of the martyrdom of Fathi Shaqaqi, the former co-founder and Secretary-General of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine, the British political commentator, Rodney Shakespeare said: “Fathi Shaqaqi understood the necessity for successful national resistance to having a religious basis. He wanted co-operation between Sunnis, Shias, and Christians.”

Talking about the history of Palestinian resistance before the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Shakespeare noted: “In the 1967 war, Israel had occupied Gaza, the West Bank, Golan Heights, East Jerusalem (AlQuds), and Sinai peninsula: Egyptian, Syrian and Jordanian military forces were humiliated and defeated. About 1,000,000 people fled or were displaced from the West Bank/Gaza; and 100,000 fled or were displaced from the Golan Heights.”

“In the 1973 war, Egypt failed to regain Sinai and Syria failed to regain Golan. The 1978, Camp David Accords required recognition of Israel (although Egypt regained Sinai) but left the West Bank, Al-Quds and Golan still occupied. However, the 1979 Revolution in Iran gave hope that, even though the autocratic regimes of Saudi Arabia and the like were giving tacit support to Israel, there was one country -- Iran -- which was prepared to stand up to Israel and the West. Today, Iran's consistent support for Palestine is symbolized by Al-Quds Day,” he added.

He then called the Western mainstream media a tool “controlled by Zionist”, saying there are propagandist lies about the Palestinian resistance and “This lie is a cunning, subtle way of implying that Israel has a right to occupy the lands of others.”

Shakespeare also talked about Fathi Shaqaqi and his role in changing the direction of the Palestinian resistance. He said: “Fathi Shaqaqi came from a refugee family living in Gaza; it had fled from Ramiah. Just after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, he wrote a pamphlet praising Ayatollah Khomeini and the Islamic Alternative. In short, he understood the necessity for successful national resistance to having a religious basis. He wanted co-operation between Sunnis, Shias, and Christians.”

“The religious basis of Palestinian resistance ensures that it will never die,” he highlighted.

The British political analyst noted that “faith in Allah and an associated belief that, one day, Justice will prevail can save you from physical and psychological collapse,” when freedom is being oppressed.

The current Palestinian resistance is certainly the result of the culture of resistance that was initiated by Fathi Shaqaqi. If the current resistance defeats the Zionist regime in the Gaza Strip and prevents further occupation, that is the reason for the faith that Fathi Shaqaqi created in the hearts of Palestinians.
