Fathi Shaqaqi defined liberation
of Palestine as religious duty

Jafar Razavi

Qodsna (Tehran) - On the occasion of the anniversary of the martyrdom of the co-founder and Secretary-General of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine,  Fathi Shaqaqi, Jafar Razavi, a political analyst in the field of Palestine-Israel affairs said in his exclusive interview with Qods News Agency that before the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Palestinian resistance didn’t have a supporter in the region.

“As a result, Palestinians didn’t reach any significant achievement in their fight against the Zionist regime. At that time, Palestinian groups had a leftist-socialist viewpoint towards countering Israel, and there wasn’t any religious bedrock in their resistance. Also, they didn’t see a clear external supporter, so the Palestinian resistance was not effective and efficient,” Razavi said.

Talking about the role of Fathi Shaqaqi in organizing the Palestinian resistance, he noted: “Fathi Shaqaqi designed the liberation of Palestine based on a religious task for the first time. According to this new definition, all Muslim people must support the liberation of Palestine. In fact, Fathi Shaqaqi was inspired by Imam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, and he then implemented the principles of the Islamic Revolution in the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine.”

Jafari then said that the manifesto of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine stresses the liberation of the whole of Palestinian territories. This refers to a Palestinian state based on 1947 borders without Israeli occupation.

The Iranian political expert also underlined that the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine never give up the Palestinian cause and has continued to resistance against Israeli occupation over the past decades. “A great achievement made by the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine is the independence of Palestinians in fighting with Israel because their resistance has been based on their religious beliefs.

Jafar Razavi went on to say that the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine has caused massive upheavals in the process of Palestinian resistance and it was obvious in the first Palestinian Intifada, which forced the Zionist regime to hold several meetings with the PLO.

“The Oslo accord is the result of the Zionist regime’s run away from the next Intifada. However, the Islamic Jihad Movement as well as the Hamas Movement continued their resistance and reached significant victories during the second Intifada,” he added.

Fathi Shaqaqi (1951 –1995) was the co-founder and Secretary-General of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine. He was assassinated in Malta by Mossad agents, on October 26, 1995.

Shortly after the Iranian Revolution, Shaqaqi wrote a book, "Imam Khomeini, The Islamic Solution and the Alternative", which praised Ayatollah Khomeini and his approach to an Islamic state. In Shaqaqi's view the Khomeini victory "demonstrated that even against an enemy as powerful as the Shah, a jihad of determined militants could overcome all obstacles."
