Inside US, Protesters demanded release of Jailed Palestinian Teen in NY

Protestors chanted and carried banners reading “Release Ahed Tamimi Now”, “US has to stop helping Israel” and "Palestinian prisoners needs to be released," Anadolu Agency reported.

In a press release handed out during the demonstration, Israel was accused of illegally detaining her and information was given about her family's activism which includes them also being shot by Israeli soldiers in the past. The event ended without incident.

Israeli authorities sought 12 charges against Ahed Tamimi, a prominent 16-year-old Palestinian activist filmed slapping and kicking two Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank.

During a hearing on Monday at Israel's Ofer military court near Ramallah, Ahed was charged with 12 counts, including allegedly assaulting an Israeli soldier, interfering with a soldier's duties and two past instances of stone-throwing, according to her lawyer Gabi Laski.

Laski said Nariman was charged with alleged "incitement" for uploading the video on social media, as well as another charge of assault, adding that Ahed and Nariman's charges include older alleged incidents unrelated to the video.

Nour was charged on Sunday with allegedly assaulting a soldier and interfering with a soldier's duties, Laski underlined, stressing that owing to the charges against Ahed, "there's a possibility of her facing a lot of time".

She noted that Palestinian teenagers typically face about six to nine months in prison for charges of stone-throwing.

Ahed's father, Bassem, said it was very likely his daughter would be sentenced and imprisoned over the charges.

"They built the case around her specifically to try to keep her in prison as long as they can," he stressed.

"I am very worried about my daughter," Bassem added, who has also been arrested numerous times by Israeli forces.

"Her fate is now in the hands of people who don't even see Palestinians as full human beings," he underscored.

Bassem said Israel is attempting to "break Ahed because she is a symbol of the resistance", adding that "Israel wants to show other young Palestinians what will happen to them if they try to resist,".

Ahed, 16, was arrested by Israeli forces during a predawn raid on her home last week in the village of Nabi Saleh, located in the central occupied West Bank.

Tamimi’s cousin Nour was also arrested. Her mother Nariman Tamimi was detained as well, when she went to the police station where her daughter was being held.

She became the latest face of Palestinian resistance when footage emerged of her slapping one and then another fully-armed Israeli officer in the face during a protest in her home village of Nabi Saleh, near the Palestinian city of Ramallah.

Ahed, whose family is well-known internationally for their activism against the Israeli occupation, was arrested over a video that went viral on social media of her slapping an armed Israeli officer during a raid on Nabi Saleh.

She is well-known across Palestine and the Arab world for videos of her, since her childhood, defiantly resisting Israeli soldiers who clash with Palestinians in her village nearly every week.

An Israeli soldier shot Ahed Tamimi’s brother Mohammad, 14, in the head during a demonstration in late December. He has been released from the hospital after undergoing surgery and a medically induced coma.

The Tamimis have long been targeted for their activism. In 2011, an Israeli soldier fired a tear gas canister from closer range at Mustafa Tamimi, killing him.

US President Donald Trump announced early December 2017 that Washington would be recognizing Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital, stressing that the United States would relocate the embassy in the occupied lands from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds.

The move was hailed by Israel but condemned by the rest of the international community as one which undermines the peace talks.

Washington’s al-Quds move has raised a chorus of outcry across the international community. The Muslim world, the UN, world leaders from Europe to the Middle East to Australia, and even US allies in the West have criticized the bid, saying it would plunge the already tumultuous region into new upheaval.

Heavy clashes also broke out between Israeli troops and Palestinian protesters after Washington's decision in Jerusalem al-Qud's Old City, Hebron (al-Khalil), Bethlehem and Nablus in the West Bank as well as the besieged Gaza Strip.

According to reports, at least 700 Palestinians were detained by the Israeli forces since Washington’s move to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as the capital of Israel.

17 Palestinians were also killed in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank during weeks of protests against the Washington declaration of Jerusalem as capital of Israel, according to reports.

Also, thousands of Palestinians have been wounded by Israeli army's fire during demonstrations against the US President decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Also, the Palestinian ministry of public health in Gaza announced that the Israeli occupation forces use unknown gas bombs which caused cases of stress, convulsion, vomiting, coughing and rapid heartbeat among the Palestinian civilians. It stressed that the Zionist forces fire bullets directly on the Palestinian protestors.

The Israeli regime forces use brutal and excessive force against the civilians and the rescue teams as well as the medics, according to the Palestinian ministry which called for denouncing the racist actions of the Israeli authorities.

People in different countries have also hit the streets to denounce Trump's recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), in a statement issued following an extraordinary summit in Turkey's Istanbul, declared East Jerusalem the capital of Palestine "under occupation" and urged the US to withdraw from the peace process and back down from its Jerusalem decision.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) overwhelmingly passed a non-binding resolution condemning Trump’s decision and called on states not to move their diplomatic missions to the sacred city. The UNGA vote followed the US veto of a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution.
