Arab states
rescued Israel

It was in the past that Israel was emboldened by a weak Arab position to advance its expansionist policies. Today, the Arab and Islamic governments are racing to support Israel in their decisions against the Palestinians.

The states in their recent position over the al-Aqsa developments were motivated by a fear for a new intifada rather than opposition against Israel. A new intifada would change the situation for all parties at time when the international community pursues a so-called century deal to remove the Palestinian issue.

Historically, all editions of intifada were contained through US and Israeli talks with Arab states. A similar situation took place in the current waves of protests in the Aqsa mosque with five major parties were involved this time, including from Arab and the West, namely the US, Jordan, Saudi, Egypt and Turkey.

The US has not taken the situation seriously with Trump’s circle of aides pursing the policy of unfettered support to Israel. The reality was clear in Trump’s aide, Jared Kushner’s remarks that the US has not demanded Israel to remove the security gates as the entries to the holy mosque.

Jordan for its part saw the situation detrimental to its interests as it serves as the guardian of the mosque under a deal with the Palestinian authority in 2003. The Israeli actions would prove harmful to Jordan’s interests and the PA considers Jordan as responsible for the situation in the mosque.

Israel Today daily says all the recent contacts between Jordan and Israel in the past few days were coordinated by the US, Saudi and Egypt. The contacts however have angered Palestinians who say Jordan has failed to inform them in time of the Israeli decisions concerning the security gates and that it continues to contact Israel through a committee in which no Palestinian representative sits.

Saudi Arabia for its part has considered the Israeli security measures as normal and even calls them necessary for countering ‘terrorism.’ Saudi’s position has proved encouraging for Israel. At the same time, Saudi has used its contacts with its Arab allies as a lever against Palestinians.

Egypt as another party to the situation has already transformed from an axial government into a follower of the Persian Gulf littoral Arab states. Previously, any measure over Palestine needed to be involved by Egypt but today Egypt’s role is defined under other active parties.

Turkey too, despite occasional internal efforts to rally its people against Israel, has always coordinated its position with Arab states as it remains alone in the absence of a trustworthy ally among the Arab states.

Palestinians have remained alone in their struggle against the occupiers and the time has passed when streets in the Arab cities were packed with angry protesters in support of the Palestinian nation.

Arab nations who previously encouraged their governments to adopt some position concerning the Palestinian issue have now become indifferent either due to the post-Arab Spring armed conflicts or the pro-Israeli position of their governments.
