Aqsa shooting attack
Blow to Israel

Hamza Abu Shanab

With the Friday morning breeze, one hour after the dawn prayer at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in the occupied al-Quds (‘Jerusalem’), and as Muslim worshipers were reading the Quran, Palestinians were surprised by three young men carrying out a shooting attack at the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The operation, by the three martyrs, all named Mohammed Jabareen, was carried out with a great courage as videos published on social media websites have shown, which suggests good planning, according to political analysts.

In separate interviews with the PIC, analysts said that the timing of the operation gave it a great success in light of the continuous Israeli attacks and incursions into the holy city and the escalation in recent months.

Hamza Abu Shanab, an expert on Israeli affairs and a political analyst explained that the operation in Quds constituted a qualitative shift in the resistance attacks, in terms of timing and place of implementation, noting that it emphasized the unity of the land and the Palestinian people geographically and in all places of existence.

Abu Shanab said that the timing of the operation and its location dealt a security blow to the Israeli security apparatuses and army, especially in light of the procedures taken against Muslim worshipers at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Political analyst Ibrahim Al-Madhoun agrees on the importance of the timing of the operation, which comes in line with the struggle of the Palestinian people, and the expansion of the Quds Intifada (Uprising).

“There is no specific time for operations, and this is a reaction to the continuing violations of the Israeli occupation, and its presence and threats that target Al-Aqsa Mosque,” Al-Madhoun told our correspondent.

Al-Madhoun believes that the place of the operation is important because the Palestinian people believe in its holiness, adding that that it also dealt a security blow to the Israeli occupation authorities, expecting that the consequences of the operation will grow further, “because it is the place that the whole world must pay attention to.” The attack reminds Arabs and Muslims, “especially those who are racing to normalize ties with Israel", of Al-Aqsa Mosque and its importance, he underlined.

Significance of the Operation

Speaking of the indications highlighted by the group that carried out the operation, Abu Shanab noted that the Israeli occupation fears the collective action planned by individuals, pointing to the development of this type of unorganized operations, which no particular faction plans.

Abu Shanab pointed out that Israel is increasingly concerned with the possibility of a continuous intifada in the West Bank, pointing out that the Quds shooting attack increased the security burden for the occupation.

The occupation, according to Abu Shanab, is going to continue the process of repression against Palestinian cities and individuals who plan such attacks.

Abu Shanab said that these young men would have inflicted more casualties against the enemy, had they owned more advanced tools and weapons, and that the success of the shooting would have been more than achieved.

Warning to Israeli ministers

Abu Shanab pointed out that the operations in Quds and the courtyards of Al-Aqsa came in response to the repeated aggression of the occupation against Al-Aqsa Mosque, especially allowing Israeli ministers to break into the holy compound, stressing that this shooting attack would serve as a caution to the Israeli ministers and MPs in case they plan to embark on such visits.

Writer and political analyst Iyad Al-Qarra opined that Al-Aqsa shooting would curb the Israeli incursions into Islamic holy sites in the long run.

According to Al-Qarra, the operation will have consequences and will encourage a bigger number of young people to carry out similar attacks, noting that the perpetrators have trained well, “which led to the success of the shooting attack.”

Speaking of the actions that might be taken by the occupation after the operation, the writer added that the occupation will intensify its repressive acts against residents of Quds, inside the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque, and will work on annexing parts of the Al-Aqsa under security claims to protect the invading Israeli settlers, in addition to the prosecution and arrest of a large number of youths from the banned Islamic Movement inside the 1948 occupied territories.

Internal and external messages

Abu Shanab stressed that the timing of the shooting is important and sensitive, not only for the Palestinians, especially in light of the electricity crisis in Gaza, and the various humanitarian crises experienced by the Palestinian people.

He pointed out that it is a big response to what some Arab countries are doing and their classification of the Palestinian resistance as “terrorist” while normalizing ties with the occupation.

He pointed out that the shooting is telling a clear message mainly that any harm done to Al-Aqsa Mosque will lead to a Palestinian revolt. The Stone Uprising in 1987, Al-Aqsa Uprising in 2000. and the 1929 Buraq Revolution were all for the sake of Al-Aqsa Mosque and this is the most important message of the shooting, according to him.

Al-Madhon concluded that, “Our people had foiled plans of the Israeli occupation to end the Quds Intifada,” noting that the Palestinian people will not give up and the resistance will continue and escalate in the few coming days.
