Mubarak, winning side in Rafah border opening

"Palestinian women successfully broke apart the wall separating Gaza and Egypt after overcoming the anti-riot Egyptian forces to make a breakthrough which Palestinian men could not make through negotiation tables or even launching war."

This is the idea of an Arab expert who was speaking to TV networks hours after the Rafah border crossing opened.

No doubt, the main loser of the story was the Zionist regime which no longer could count on previous definitions and terms that the PA-signed agreements had accorded to Palestinian border crossings.

Mubarak on the other hand was the main winner as he adopted the bold act in the political scene.

Even after three decades of signing Camp David peace deal with the Zionist regime, Mubarak has yet to convince the Egyptians to consider the Zionist regime as friend. He was in dire need of such a maneuver to counter the perception and reduce anti-government sentiments.

In international scene, Mubarak made his Gaza border opening order into a firm reaction against the US Congress' move to reduce financial aid to the country. Mubarak showed to the American authorities he still holds a powerful say in the Palestinian issue and could change the balance of power in the region. It also made them know that reductions in financial aid could mean lesser security on the part of the Israeli side.

His move also allowed the flow of money from Gaza into Egyptian towns as the Gazans brought huge sums of money with themselves into Egypt to buy their needs.
