Egypt, Jordan slam Israeli expansionism

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit on Thursday slammed Zionist regime for its launching a tender to build new housing units at a Zionist settlement in the occupied East Beit Ul Moqaddas, said a Foreign Ministry statement.

Voicing astonishment at the Israeli tender, Abul Gheit, who is currently on a visit to Brussels, said that the measure runs counter to Israel's commitments in U.S. organized meeting recently held in the Annapolis.

The statement quoted Abul Gheit as saying that the Israeli move also violates the trust-building measures it had pledged to take in an attempt to create a suitable atmosphere for launching serious negotiations with the Palestinian side.

The Egyptian top diplomat called on the international community, especially the countries which attended the Annapolis peace meeting, to shoulder responsibilities and press Zionist regime to give up the move.

Jordanian government too on Thursday condemned Zionist plans. State Minister for Media Affairs and Communications Nasser Judeh was quoted by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, as saying the Israeli measures contradict international legitimacy resolutions and the international law that considers the West Bank, including East Beit Ul Mogaddas, as occupied lands.

The minister said Jordan completely rejects these measures.

Judeh stressed that Israel's continued evasion of its commitments under the roadmap and the expansion of settlements is a major obstacle to tangible and serious progress in the peace process, and will hamper efforts to build on the positive results reached in the recent Annapolis meeting in the US.

On Tuesday, Zionists announced the launch of a tender for the construction of 307 housing units in the East Beit Ul Moqaddas neighborhood of Jabal Abu-Ghoneim.

Since 1967, Zionist regime has built a string of Jewish neighborhoods in East Beit Ul Mogaddas , with about 180,000 residents.
